David Pablo Cohn picked up his mother’s guitar at age 12 and has spent the last half century writing and singing songs about wherever he’s found himself since. These days, that means singing about working below deck on research ships, or swapping stories around the fire with fellow adventurers at home in Port Townsend. His songs try to capture the sense of unique person-in-place experiences – hunkering down with shipmates through an Antarctic storm, or contemplating the end of a journey – and a life at sea – on a quiet night watch.
In 2024, his song, “Learning the Lines” was awarded runner up in the Robert Kotta Memorial Songwriting Contest. In 2025, his song “True as the Sea” won first place in that contest, and “Play Time” was a finalist in the Jane Titland Memorial Songwriting Contest.
